For me it's the opposite. My job means I have to focus on defense, but I don't get too many chances to spar.

May I ask what sort of job you have that requires defense?

I investigate murders, among other things. Sometimes that's not safe.

I can see why it wouldn't be, but it's admirable of you to choose such a potentially dangerous profession.

As long as I can prevent people from getting hurt.

You know, I don't think I caught your line of work. I might be really absent-minded, though!

I don't have a job at the moment; my family was rather well-off, so there was no need for me to work while I was growing up. Lately I've been focusing my energies on my studies instead.

So what kind of studies are you focusing on? Those usually say a lot about a person.

Politics, mostly, along with some history and literature. My father felt that it was important to be well-read in a variety of subjects, not just the ones that interested me, so he encouraged me to read as much as possible.

Your father was smart. Sounds like you've gotten a quality education. History is one thing I like to read about, if I can choose, but I can't say I've delved too much into literature.

Out of curiosity, did your dad want you to go into politics?

My family has been in politics for generations. I can't imagine doing anything else, nor would I want to. I suppose you could say that it's my destiny.

Destiny, hmm? It must be nice to have a purpose like that.

Sometimes it is, but other times I find myself wondering what my life would be like if I didn't.

I'm not sure it'd feel any different than being here. Maybe better, maybe not.

But I understand wondering what life would be like if something could be changed.

I think we all wonder that at some point or another... the only difference is that some people choose to dwell on it while others make the best of the hand they've been dealt.

I think so, too. But don't you think it's possible to do both?

True, but how many people do you think would admit to it?

You mean it's not common to do so?

Most people don't like to admit their weaknesses or failings to others for whatever reason. I can't say I blame them, either.

It depends on whether or not they think they'll be punished for it, doesn't it?

I suppose it does, but there are also those who just don't want other people to know.

Do you mean because they have enemies that might exploit a weakness like that?

Yes, or because they want to pretend they don't have any weaknesses at all.

Everyone has weaknesses. They just hope no one figures them out.
