[It's a beautiful, sunny day. The temperature is apparently between "boiling point" and "molten lava", and every sane person is inside, hugging their air conditioner.]

[Except for this guy. Tsuzuki is searching the grass outside House 49. He looks downright distressed, sitting on his knees and brushing his fingers through the lawn and dirt. When he's down with one patch, he hurries to the next one, not caring much about the heat even though his body does.]

It has to be around here somewhere...

Oh no...[Tsuzuki's wings droop with understanding. He reaches out to place a hand on the prince's shoulder.]

Richard, I'm so sorry.

[He shakes his head quietly.]

My father had always been ill, so I'd been prepared for his death for a while... just not in that manner.

No, I understand. No one should have to die like that.

Did you find the one that murdered him?

[How to explain this without giving away too much...]

We did. We were on our way to fight him when I was brought here. But whether we'll win or not... I don't know.

[Good question! Tsuzuki wonders at the choice of words.]

Why didn't you tell the police, so they could arrest him?

The Royal Knights are the police in Balonia, and they were the ones who betrayed my family. Going to them would have served no purpose.

[It finally dawns on him. Tsuzuki keeps his voice down, in case Richard preferred to keep it a secret.]

Were you royalty, Richard?

[Well, his secret is out. There's no point denying it anymore, not to someone who was smart enough and observant enough to figure it out on his own.

He nods.]

... I'm the Prince of Windol. I think it should be clear why they wanted my father killed.

[Tsuzuki would bow with respect, but they are in public. If Richard is that secretive about his past, then being outed by him is clearly not something he'd appreciate.]

Yes, it is obvious. And I'm still sorry. Your highness.

The murderer is going to be charged with treason when you find him, I suppose?

Please, just call me Richard. I'd rather you didn't treat me any differently because of this... here I can just be a normal person, not a prince. This is the first time in my life I've ever had this chance.

[His eyes narrow slightly as he looks down.]

... I know it isn't right, but I want to get revenge on him myself.

In that case, your secret's safe with me, Richard.

It's understandable. [Tsuzuki quietens down. He thinks Richard is too young to focus on revenge, but he doesn't say so.] Wait, I don't think you told me his name.

The murderer's name? Cerdic. He wished to take control of the throne for himself and become king. So far, he's succeeded in both of those things.

!!

Does he want you dead because of it? You're the only one left of the old line, after all.

[Richard's eyes darken as he looks down at the ground.]

He attempted to assassinate me as well, but I was lucky enough to be able to escape.

How did you get away?

I used the chaos as an opportunity to escape into the tunnels beneath the castle. Asbel found me there, and together the two of us fled to a nearby town where I was able to ask for aid from another friend.

Did you end up here right after that?

Not immediately after-- it was the next day when I was brought here, but I suppose that's close enough.

That counts as 'right after', in my opinion. You didn't get a chance to do much after it happened, and then you ended up here.

It's creepy, though. It's like these kidnappings occur right after catastrophes.

You'd almost think they do it on purpose... or perhaps they do. Perhaps that state of jumbled emotions makes it easier for them to transport us here somehow, and that's why they choose those times to kidnap us.

It could be. I want to ask more people about their experiences first, but it's a good theory.

It's certainly a better one than anything else I've heard yet.

What's strange is that there's kids born here. If they could simply breed us, why do they kidnap new ones?

People have had children here?

[That's... a somewhat distressing revelation.]

There must not be enough of them born to satisfy the Malnosso, or they can't use young children in their experiments.
