Fuda # 6
[It's a beautiful, sunny day. The temperature is apparently between "boiling point" and "molten lava", and every sane person is inside, hugging their air conditioner.]
[Except for this guy. Tsuzuki is searching the grass outside House 49. He looks downright distressed, sitting on his knees and brushing his fingers through the lawn and dirt. When he's down with one patch, he hurries to the next one, not caring much about the heat even though his body does.]

Dangerous or mortifying and embarrassing.
What do you call them? And no, there aren't any "sages" back home. We're all witches and wizards or Muggles. Unicorns are fairly common, but they live out of sight of most people and only like to be approached by women. They're skittish and extremely valuable.
♥!
Sounds like you know this too well. How did you find out you had magical abilities?
Well, we call them kirin. They have a very strong sense of justice, and when they walk they do not disturb the grass on the ground. They're usually very peaceful, but not timid.
What did you mean, 'valuable'?

Well, being able to find exactly what I wanted when I wanted it, especially in books. I'd always turn to the right page when it really came down to a test. Mine wasn't ever really life-threatening, but it was important to me. [That whole fear of being wrong thing. Yeah.]
Oh I see. If only ours worked that way. Their horns and tails are very powerful and can be used in spells or wandmaking, and their blood is said to keep someone alive even if they're an inch from death, but a terrible price comes with it. Killing such a pure animal to drink its blood means you'll be cursed. Your life will be cursed from then on. It's not really worth it. [Unless your name is Voldemort.]

So the magic responded to what was in your heart? Or maybe I should say, what was important to you. There's a difference between you two. ...I think I know what I'd wish for, if I had gotten magical abilities when I was young.
....Cursed how?
♥! - it helps in times of trouble :D;
Yes, but that was before I knew about witches and wizards and all manner of things and the before the Second wizarding war. And besides that, getting good marks in school will help me help others in the long run, especially underprivileged ones.
[She shrugs.] We're not certain for sure. I've heard you'll live a half-life. It's like you're not really alive or dead, you're in between, and probably a lot less human for slaying something so pure. [another half-shrug.] The only person I know who's done it is now dead and the one who was possessing half his head is currently the one we're hiding from back home. So, unfortunately, I can't ask anyone, either.
♥!
That... I'm pretty sure that's accurate. It sounds [heartbreakingly familiar] like what some people go through in Japan. Although I have no idea how people can possess only half a head...
♥!
And that depends on which war you're talking about. The first one we won. Bit of an accident, really. The second one was still going on when I arrived here. It wasn't looking too good.
I don't understand it, either. Voldemort was only in a spirit form. He had no body at the time and barely enough strength to do anything. He could only survive by unicorn's blood and riding along in another's body. So it wasn't really true possession. Quirrel could act and think for himself, though he obeyed Voldemort's commands.
♥!
Sorry to hear that. What did you do to win the first one?
That sounds like a very complicated spell or curse. It sounds like what could happen if a half-god was killed back in Japan. Sometimes they could possess their murderers to get revenge.
Voldemort? That's such a strange name.
♥!
I was nearly two years old. Voldemort tried to kill Harry and it backfired. Nearly killed him instead. No one knows why, but he lost all his powers.
I don't know, actually, and it's one thing I don't care to know more about. Quirrel wasn't in his right mind by the time I knew him.
He chose it in school apparently.
♥!
Probably not worth delving into. If you know too much about the harmful spells, there's always a chance that they begin to look tempting to try out.
Strange how things that happen in school can have such a devastating impact on your life.
♥!
For some people. For others it's just disgusting.
Or a large impact at all, be it good or bad. [Hi there, Fred and George.. Umbridge... and all those Death Eaters.]
♥!
I have to wonder if it's something that people grow to like. You know, like alcohol? Certain people become heavy drinkers, while others can't stand the stuff.
True. What would you say made the biggest impact on you, Hermione?
♥!
The Dark Arts are a lot like that sort of thing. Vile and destructive.
[Her pensive expression turns to a slow smile.] Getting locked in the bathroom with a mountain troll.
♥!
Some people might think the secrecy of the dark arts is fascinating. Are all of them bad?
What. Seriously?
♥!
Yes, yes they are. [But she looks conflicted.] Very rarely can they be used to help anyone. The worst of them are three curses known as the Unforgivable Curses. Using any of them on a fellow human results in a lifetime sentence in Azkaban, the wizard prison.
[She laughs at that.] Yes. That's the only reason Harry and Ron are my friends now - they saved me from it on Halloween of our very first year at school - and I wouldn't be the person I am today if they hadn't.
♥!
That sounds like a severe punishment. What exactly do the Unforgivables do, Hermione?
No wonder you three are such close friends. [Then it clicks in his mind, and his eyes light up.] You had Halloween in your world! Finally, someone who knows what it is!
♥!
There are three of them: The Imperius Curse, which renders someone completely under the caster's control, the Cruciatus Curse, which is a form of physical torture, and the Killing Curse. They're terrible spells. [One of which, she has actually used. The idea gives her very visible chills.]
We did have quite a lot in common after that. [she laughs.] Yes, we had Halloween and Christmas and a lot of other holidays typical on Earth.
♥!
..... Those are horrible! Is there any way to hide from them? Or counter them?
There's a lot of people here that hasn't heard of them. It's such a shame! The kids should get a chance to trick-or-treat, at least.
♥!
If you know they're coming, it's possible to dodge them, but there's no way to counter or block them. It's possible to throw off the Imperius Curse, but your mind has to be very strong. There's no way to stop the other two. [And the way she looks at the mention of them... is not the usual happy Hermione. It's more the cold, resigned look she's worn over the last year at home.]
Maybe we ought to come up with a way to do that here.
♥!
...Sounds like nightmare spells. [He notices, so he's gentle when he asks the next question.] You look a little pale. Are you all right?
I'd like it if we could. Maybe inform a handful of houses to keep candy around for Halloween, so we can let the kids go to a few houses.
And maybe create some pumpkin pie. ♥
♥!
They are... they're awful. [She glances up at him when he asks that and sighs.] I've experienced them all in some capacity. One of Voldemort's Death Eaters used the Cruciatus Curse on me. [Come to think of it, another of the Death Eaters cast the Imperius Curse on all the fourth years that year, though they thought he was an Auror at the time.]
We might be able to. Hopefully Luceti itself won't have surprises like last year for us.
♥!
What happened last year?
♥!
We were hiding from them all year, trying to find a way to stop Voldemort for good.
♥!
And then you ended up here instead.
♥!
Yes. It's much nicer not having to run from everyone all the time.
